Henare Rikiihia Tau (Rik) was an elder of Ngai Tahu.  He was a powerful advocate for Maori land and water rights and a lead negotiator for the 1998 Ngai Tahu Settlement. He was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2013. Rik was born in 1941 and passed away in 2014. He was a strong supporter of the Avon Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust and the Ngai Tahu representative on the Trust Board for many years..
